I might lean towards this type of proposal over the current income tax but it would still be extortion under the definition we worked with in our previous posts. Also there are a number of practical and political difficulties with the idea. Any change would probably be phased in so for a time we might have both taxes and this could lead to higher tax levels. Also what about all the retired people who have paid taxes on their incomes for all of their lives and now have to pay taxes on the money they have managed to save after those income taxes every time they spend things. If you don't personally consider this a practical or moral problem it is at least a political problem because the elderly vote at a higher rate then most other age groups and I am sure some group that is against eliminating the federal income tax would bring it to their attention. Also there is the political diffculty that liberals and even moderates would say we are "hurting the poor" because now they pay a smaller percentage (or 0%) but with a sales tax they would pay the same percentage as everyone else.
