Jfred, well, we have nearly made it to the end of 2001 and still no deflationary collapse although there has been a LOT of fun in the markets.

If George W and Congress declare a one year moratorium on taxes and print $1 trillion or whatever it takes to run USS Enterprise, then there won't be any deflation. There will be a LOT of people getting retail therapy to help them recover from the drama of the past couple of months.

I suppose that could cause the US$ to drop somewhat. Maybe even quite a bit. But that would be no bad thing because it's been zooming up a lot relative to important currencies such as the Kiwi [now at 41c to 1 Kiwi versus 70c to 1K a few years ago].

PS: Incidentally, I've wondered whether the USA has developed an esprit de corps as in Britain during WWII during which time the population became more cheerful while mayhem reigned. My theory is that Prozac consumption would be down in the USA as a result of the WTC attack and anthrax paranoia. I couldn't find a link. What say you?
