I totally agree with you on the issue of "pro forma," whatever that is. I very closely follow (on an FA level) some 76 companies that represent about 50% of all the equity traded in this Republic. I've noted that about 75% of them play the "earnings game" straight; the earnings are what the earnings are. However, the other 25% really push the edges. As I asked in my main sandbox, what were LU's earnings. I have some accounting credentials in this regard, and I cannot state what they were! Maybe I'm lacking in the new math.

The powers that be (currently the SEC) really need to help the investor out on this issue. The companies that are playing games have carte blanche. I'm really glad that AOL got creamed with their game. EDITDA is a joke. Most companies would look pretty good if they could just ignore those pesky accounting issues of interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization.
