Hi Bill/WA, My clarification from the trenches. We actually make a distinction between the iffy quality camera-in-theatre kind of pirated VCD and the high quality (as high as any legit item) pirated stuff done from the master. The camera in theatre copies are always not satisfying, poor in sound sync, very dark and sometimes feature moving heads of audience, or some guy standing up to go to the bathroom. The stuff from master is indistinguishable from the legit VCDs (yup, we have those here too, w/ the VCD selling at not much more than the pirated stuff).

To get more value for their effort, the pirates are putting popular movies and first-run movies expected to be popular on DVDs, selling at a small (20-30%) premium to the pirated VCDs.

Chugs, Jay
