DJ Veeco Instruments Earnings -3: Sees FY01 As Growth Year

Veeco Instruments Inc. (VECO) expects third quarter earnings of 30 cents to
38 cents a share on revenue of $100 million to $110 million. The company
plans to reduce its staff by about 8%, or 130 people, and said it
anticipates third quarter bookings of $70 million to $80 million.
Veeco won't provide guidance beyond the third quarter, citing a lack of
visibility and uncertain business conditions. The company, however, remains
confident that 2001 overall will show growth in both revenue and earnings.
A Thomson Financial/First Call survey of analysts produced a mean third
quarter earnings estimate of 37 cents a share on revenue of $110.5 million
and forecast 2001 earnings of $1.65 a share and revenue of $456.9 million
for the company.
Veeco earned 20 cents a share on revenue of $92.9 million for the
year-earlier third quarter.
The company earned 91 cents a share on revenue of $386.5 million in 2000.
