NEC says mulling Y50 bln cut in 01/02 capex

Friday July 27, 2:54 am Eastern Time

TOKYO, July 27 (Reuters) - Japanese chipmaker NEC Corp said on Friday it was mulling cutting 50 billion yen ($400 million) from its planned 285 billion yen in capital spending for this business year, with most cuts likely to come in the chip sector.

NEC, the world's third-largest chipmaker, announced in April a capital spending plan for the business year to next March that included 144 billion yen to be allocated to semiconductors, down 34 percent from a year earlier.

Analysts had said, however, that a further cut would likely be needed given the steep and protracted slump that has hit the global chip market.
