As I understand, an additional 45 minutes of footage is added to the already long film. Coppolla has supposedly said it was the movie he meant to make, before he had near mental breakdown during its making. It will be very interesting to see what the additions do for the flick.

I am a great fan of LOTR, though I am not much into fantasy fiction as a genre. Most fantasy is, well, too fantastic. Tolkien's Middle Earth seems so encompassing, the suspension of disbelief is complete. Other fantasy seems contrived, while Middle Earth feels familiar. It is stirring, because it is familiar. Homer lives in Middle Earth. It is stirring because it recalls all the mythic elements of the Western tradition.

Bakshi botched it, in my opinion. I get motion sickness watching it, for one. And far too many liberties were taken. It seemed to reduce the story to pop camp. We'll see how PJ handles it. I have my fingers crossed.
