And one gold star for thecow!

If anyone's interested, I have apparently resolved my shutdown problem. First, downloaded and installed nVidia driver. Nope. Then tried Linksys for a driver upgrade - none available. Reading the ahuma link, saw a comment about disabling or removing extraneous networking protocols. That worked...once. Since the easy tricks were failing me, I grimly proceeded through the 15 step troubleshooting tips in the ccs.org link. At step 15 (of course), I came to the following:

"A further variation is to remove the network card and place it in another slot. MS-MVP Mark Phillips reports repairing almost all shutdown problems in his office environment by moving the network card."

Since I only tried one other slot during my previous attempt, and having 4 additional open slots, I proceded. Finally, on the third, I was able to successfully shutdown!!!

Thanks to all for the advice and encouragement. Great thread you've got here!
