Amgen Inc. (NasdaqNM:AMGN - news), the world's largest biotechnology company, late Thursday reported a 6 percent rise in earnings that beat estimates amid solid sales of its anemia drug Epogen and immunity-boosting drug Neupogen. It ended Thursday at $57.72 but its shares jumped to $61.20 in pre-open activity on the Instinet system Friday.

VeriSign Inc. (NasdaqNM:VRSN - news) , domain names manager and a provider of e-commerce services, jumped to $52.75 vs. $47.17. After Thursday's close, it reported a second-quarter net loss of $11.2 billion as it wrote down $9.9 billion of the value of acquisitions made near the peak of the Internet boom. Still, on a narrower operating basis its results edged past analysts' expectations.
