The reduction in gold extraction was due to the delay in the start of the season caused by weather conditions. The cold winter with little snow delayed the onset of spring, according to Pavel Zorin, deputy of the Irkutsk Region Legislative Assembly. The amount of drilling and blasting work increased as a result. Moreover, frequent storms in June and July played havoc with the operation of power lines and transformer substations, which interrupted the supply of power to the gold fields. The gold- extraction quota for Bodaybinskiy District enterprises in 2001 is 15.7 tonnes, which includes 8.4 tonnes for the Lenzoloto Open Joint- Stock Company; 5.9 tonnes for large artels, and 1.3 tonnes for small artels. The largest quantity of precious metal extracted since the start of the season has been at Lenzoloto - 2.5 tonnes. Last week 242 kilos of gold were extracted at Lenzoloto. The major artels in Bodaybinskiy District have extracted over 1.6 tonnes of gold since the start of the season, 70 per cent less than for the comparable period last year. Since the start of the season, extraction at the small artels has been almost 50 kilos down on the same period last year. Publication date: 2001-07-26 © 2001, YellowBrix, Inc.
