The $1,000 was a one-time donation. Combined with scores of other locals also contributing same, that's a pretty good chunk of change for the strikers' strike fund. Also, had we been asked to contribute more, I'm sure our executive committee would have said yes.

President of our local receives $200 a month. So in addition to working at the plant for 40 to 50 hours a week, he takes care of union business and is compensated $200 a month. Three bucks an hour. That's about what he's paid for his union work.

Tell you what: Let's compare and contrast what union leaders earn in a year and what, say, Hugh McColl of Bank of America made last year (more than $30 million, wasn't it?) Or let's talk about the $3 million-a-year-for-life sweetheart deal that John McCoy, ex-CEO of Bank One, arranged for himself after screwing up the company so bad it's gonna take 5 years for Jamie Dimon (his replacement) to get back to where the company was in 1999.

Let's blame everyone but butthead, incompetent management.
