Tony,

re: Dell gaining market share by leaps and bounds in this crummy market, because of their business model, and, as Frank points out, the stability and reliability of Dell's products, are overwhelming reasons for them to stay all Intel.

The other advantage, with Dell's model, is that with only one vendor you don't have a duplication of equivalent component inventory. Like having a 1.3 GHz chip from both Intel and AMD sitting on the shelf. So you can turn your inventory faster, and take advantage of price breaks earlier than competitors that have a higher, dual supplier inventory requirements.

re: The Yankees aren't leading the AL East by at least 10 games.

It's long been my fantasy to have my Chicago Cubs in a World Series with your Red Sox. What a grand event that would be, Wrigley & Fenway, and one of the perennial losers would have to win. Earlier this year it looked like the odds had come down from ~20,000,000 to 1, to maybe 1,000,000 to 1. But they are creeping back up. Get those bums busy winning some games.

John

>What I can't figure out is this special "deal" Intel offers Dell that the locals here imply, to keep Dell an all Intel shop.<

I think the special deal that Intel offers Dell is more timely shipments. Dell may be able to order CPUs from Intel with a guarantee that they will arrive the next day, while IBM and Compaq may have shipments sent according to availability. This would be very important in a JIT inventory system.
