Most really can't afford it... don't forget credit cards, HUD, Veteran's loans, more liberal mortgages, finance companies, and other credit sources that didn't exist then.

When you subtract out the debt the average person still has a much higher net worth. When you subtract out the payments on the debt the average person still has a higher real income. In 1900 many people where either scratching a meger existance from farming or had hard dangerous industrial jobs with long hours and long pay. Yes people have too much debt now but I would take todays economy over the situation in 1900 any day.
