Handheld sales down in Europe

The market for handheld computers in Europe slowed sharply in the second quarter of 2001, falling 24 percent from the first quarter, research group Dataquest said Thursday. The market increased percent from the 7 percent in the same quarter in 2000.

The sharp slowdown, after a year in which the market grew by 123 percent to 2.1 million units, was combined with major shifts in market positions from different manufacturers. Palm narrowly held the lead with 32.3 percent market share, down from 59.5 percent in the same quarter last year. The big winner was rival Compaq Computer, which rose to grab 30.2 percent share from just 4.5 percent with its iPaq handheld based on Microsoft's Pocket PC software. Following were Britain's Psion, whose market share was cut nearly in half to 9.8 percent, and Palm licensee Handspring, which nearly doubled its share to 8.2 percent.
