Cypress Semi says orders on way up
By Chris Kraeuter, CBS.MarketWatch.com

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) - Memory-chip maker Cypress Semiconductor Chief Executive T.J. Rodgers said his bookings are up for the second quarter in a row, which signals to him the bottom has come and gone for his business.

"I'm not claiming to be the guy with the crystal ball, but when we look at the backlog and what customers tell us, it says that bookings have recovered," said Rodgers during an interview with CBS.MarketWatch.com.

Shares surged earlier Thursday after Rodgers made a presentation at an investors conference in San Francisco. Shares (CY: news, chart, profile) ended up $3.79, or 17 percent, at $26.38.

Breaking it down by market, Rodgers said the data communications market is still dead, but cellular communications is starting to turn around and PCs are alive. "Not alive and well, but alive."

"I could see a scenario where this quarter we just finished was the bottom. It is recovery and revenue from now on."

On July 18, when the company reported second-quarter results, Rodgers wasn't so definite, but he did say that the third-quarter "could well be the bottom." The second quarter ended on July 1.

Late Thursday, Rodgers said he had received orders from customers that haven't ordered for months.
