The "Reagan mandate", as I recall, wasn't created in the left wing media until AFTER he had gotten a tax cut through the House. Until then, most of the stories were wishful thinking that "he wouldn't be able to govern with a split Congress".

Sound familiar? It's always important to remember that "mandates" are not a part of the constitution, they are a creation of a media with a warehouse full of ax's to grind. Some of the greatest accomplishments in our history were by presidents who came to office in razor-close elections. Jefferson pulled off the Louisiana Purchase after it had taken months to determine if he would get the office at all. Half the states walked out of the Union after Lincoln was elected. More recently, Kennedy started a huge economic boom with a supply-side tax cut after being elected by a hair.

It goes on and on. But, bottom line, I'll take a closely-elected president anytime, as long as it's the right guy...
