If the assertion of rights were mainly disastrous to the community, then they would be qualified or curtailed, not upheld. The social contract is not a suicide pact, or a way to let tyranny in through the back door. It is because upholding rights is mostly good, not only for the individual, but for the community as a whole, by promoting prosperity, vigorous discussion, and security against tyranny, that they are recognized.
