To: Victor Lazlo who wrote (129283 ) 8/15/2001 6:46:24 PM From: craig crawford Read Replies (1) | Respond to of 164684 >> the 1st part I agree with, but demand for commodities will decline as so many economies around the world have slower growth, no? << you are talking as if this has yet to occur. it is happening as we speak and has been for quite some time. japan hasn't grown for a decade, europe has been sluggish, we had an asian/russian/latin american crisis, and now the whole world is going to hell in a handbasket. that's why many commodities are sinking along with stocks, but eventually growth will return and commodities are already cheap. stocks are NOT cheap. capiche? do you want to buy something that is so cheap there isn't much risk of loss or do you want to buy bloated pos stocks that are still so expensive that you have to have perfect timing and perfect selection to make money? >> China may not slow down as they are so huge internally, << even china may succumb to the worldwide weakness. their markets have been sliding lately. >> but there is a huge slowdown in growth going on just about everywhere else so I wouldn't count on an explosion of demand for commodities << oh for crying out loud! how many times do i have to say this?? commodities always tend to act weak as world economies collapse. eventually the worst of all possible outcomes is priced in just like for stocks. the key difference i have been trying to point out is that when the bottom is in, stocks will NOT make a meaningful comeback. commodities will, even if economic growth just kind of plods along. i never said commodities were going to explode the first day i started talking about commodities. i said there was a learning curve, and tech stocks are going NOWHERE but down so now is the time to learn about a new asset class. i think you can buy and hold commodities here and you will do well a few years out, but that doesn't mean being patient won't get you better prices down the road. you will NOT do well a few years out buying most stocks at these levels.
