You can't compare Intel to Nortel, Cisco and JDSU. Intel is in a mature and predictable industry. Nortel, Cisco, and JDSU were in a hyper growth industry with innovation occuring at light speed. In a hyper competitive environment like that, you have to acquire or fall behind. All the MBA schools out there now are teaching their students about how technology market segments are usually winner take all markets. The company to take the lead usually gets the lion's share of the profits in tech. That's why these companies went on acquisition binges. Now they've all slowed down, because the money to fund new projects has run dry, which means that the pace of their acquisitions can slow to a more reasonable rate. But when the speed was high, the hit rate was lower. That just goes with the territory. Now they can all afford to be more choosy.
