The Shootist say hit em with paint balls .... that "might" work for one or two .. but you say you have eight or more ... plus that will take a fair number of days .... of course, you can always get Shootie to come for a visit by promising him lots of targets AND a new paint ball gun ....... No matter what you've been told, raccoons are one of the easiest critters to keep away from a small local area, such as your tomato pots .... out of the yard, NOW that is a different problem ... but, as usual, I digress ... go to Home Depot, Lowes, or any building materials store and purchase the smallest bag of lime you can find .... or, if you are friendly with anyone in a school athletic dept, you could probably get a small amount for free ... but it is cheap, so HD would be easier, I suppose ..... Sprinkle the lime on the floor around the pots ... about an 18in circle is fine ..... it must be large enough to insure the critter gets some on his FRONT paws when he walks up .... after all, they use their hands just as do we humans ... so the white powder MUST get onto the "hands" .... It will only take that particular animal one move to his mouth with the hand that has the lime on it to leave ... and most likely will NOT return to that plant .... now .. you will need to go through several plants to get rid of all the raccoons, most likely, as they will damage the plant before they get it to their mouth ... so hurry hurry hurry down and purchase half a dozen plants and hopefully you will end up with at least one as you have nearly a week for optimum planting time ..... you can keep the "extras" inside the window/glass door and put one at a time outside inside the limed circle .... The only word of caution is to try not to traipse through the lime yourself ... it won't hurt, but it doesn't need to be tracked into the house and get on the carpet .... An additional item which will help is to go to a good sporting goods store ... NOT WalMart type, but a real hunting type sporting goods store ..... and buy a small bottle of fox lure OR wolf urine concentrate ..... wet a small strip of cloth .... say 1x6 inches ... and use a clothes pin to clip several strips to the side of the pot the tomato is planted in ... It will be necessary to keep these "freshened up" about every week or, just as it will the lime ..... Now, I know this sounds like an inordinate amount of work, but it really isn't ...... GO on NOW and do it ...... LOL N
