Immigrants may keep their name (I'm not sure about the "II"), but if the parents do not provide a name for their child, the local church officials name the child. It very seldom happens, but it happened recently, where the parents wanted to name their child something unspellable, but they provided two first names, and the officials just removed the one that didn't meet the criteria.

All kinds of foreign names are allowed - as immigrants want to name their children, the names are being registered - but only for one sex. An American immigrant can name a new-born boy Chris or Kim, but not a new-born girl.

There is a restriction, though, on foreign names: They must be spelled with the latin alphabet, including danish letters like Æ,Ø,Å and some accents like ü,é,è. I'm not sure about french letters like c cedille, accent grave, the oe in soeur. Having all this defined so well makes it easy to design database systems, where you can guarantee, that it can store all possible names. Using the GCTP standard (XML based) for transport of information, the register is really easy to access (under certain very strict conditions, of course). Btw.: The register has been computer based (punch cards) since 1968 and we haven't had a people count (census) since then.

We are only talking registered names - nobody prevents you from being called something differently - like having William H. Gates being called Bill.
