That's my point. You offer no evidence. In fact, there has been no "ideological evolution" of either the black or hispanic communities even though more have joined the middle class. The vote totals on Nov. 8 don't support your assertion. Factor out the Cubans living in Miami, and about 70 percent of Hispanics voted Democratic on Nov. 8; nine out of 10 African-Americans voted for Gore on Nov. 8.

So what's changed between then and now to persuade more African-Americans and more Hispanics to join the Republican Party?

Star Wars? More tax breaks for the rich? Are we seeing a federal initiative to help rebuild our cities?
