Hi, Frank - Your comments are accurate, and their importance should not be underestimated.

Trying to synthesize the facts you've noted, with the views of elmat, and the divergent claims of just about everybody else, is a frustrating and baffling exercise.

There doesn't seem to be any middle ground. Everyone claims everyone else is disconnected from reality.

Your comments about batteries, for instance, are ones I have seen repeated often - and by knowledgeable people, too: this is not simply repetition of an "urban legend". The matter is of sufficient concern that the use of mini fuel cells is being mooted as a power source.

Right off the bat, I'm in agreement with elmat's statement that things will not evolve the way it was intended. But from that point, it gets foggy.

Gradual growth of isolated 3G pockets? What is the point? They're already set to be unprofitable for years - how can they prosper without ubiquity?

The claims and dreams of the radio LAN people? Good grief, look at the price points, the infrastructure, and the hodgepodge of standards (not to mention non-standard equipment).

The shakeout has only begun. Fragmentation, unrealized dreams, capital constraints, almost surely a global economic downturn. We discussed this stuff 'wat back when, I'll try to find the post: that in an economic downturn, the preoccupation with the latest and greatest will be replaced with the CFO's obsession with the cheapest.

The only worthwhile investment in mobile wireless: Qualcomm, and anything that does, cheaply, what needs to be done with wireless.

Everyone (everyone!) else is gonna be prayin' for rain.

JMHO...

Regards,

Jim
