Carter to Assess Bangladesh Election

DHAKA, Bangladesh - Former President Jimmy Carter will arrive in Bangladesh next week to head a delegation assessing the country's preparations for fall general elections, the group sponsoring him said Sunday.
Carter and his five-member delegation are to meet with government leaders, politicians, prominent citizens and academics during the five-day visit, according to the Dhaka office of the Washington-based National Democratic Institute, the sponsor of the trip.

''The purpose of the delegation is to demonstrate the interest of the international community for a peaceful democratic election process in Bangladesh,'' the institute said Sunday in a statement.

Carter was originally scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on Monday, but will now be landing in Dhaka on Thursday.

The Democratic Institute will send local and foreign officials to observe October's elections for Bangladesh's 300-member parliament and its office of prime minister. Sheikh Hasina vacated the office July 15 and parliament was dissolved ahead of the elections, the procedure required under Bangladeshi law.

She was the first Bangladeshi leader to serve out a full five-year term in this violence-plagued South Asian nation.

<<Where was the prosperity under Reagan.............all we got was a massive deficit. If he was your greatest president, then you don't hold tough standards.>>

I bought a nicer house, car and boat. To me that is prosperity. Invested more too.

Just because you are a communist and married a Russian communist woman doesn't give you the right to trash Reagan.
