I agree that there is not a big conflict. Not only is economic liberty conducive to the general welfare, but human dignity supposes a substantial degree of autonomy. I think that the underlying principle of upholding human dignity is prior to, and that from which we derive, individual rights, and therefore, when the exercise of an apparent right leads to results that are evil, the right must be qualified or curtailed. To me, this is not a matter of pragmatism, but of reviewing the conflict between asserted right and its consequence in the light of the more fundamental principle, reconciling them according to what best conforms to the principle......
