Re: perks. The real danger for the workers is when a local union officer becomes too buddy-buddy with management, i.e., when problems are "solved" one-on-one behind closed doors. Sometimes, as you say, unethical local officers accept favors from management in return for ... We always try to have two or three or even more rank-and-file present when we discuss with management a complaint, for instance, that we think we can solve before it becomes a full-blown grievance. If the top manager at the plant and the leader of the union local respect each other but don't particularly like each other, that's a healthy relationship, as far as the workers are concerned, in my opinion.
