I'm sure they'll all agree that racism is bad, but beyond that it doesn't sound very constructive.

I don't know that it will be constructive. Frankly, I never even heard of such a conference until a few days ago so I don't have a clue as to whether or not such an event will be useful or not. I'm not much of a fan of conferences.

It isn't an endorsement of racism to be indifferent to their silly conferences.

I agree.

Why should we pay attention to the self important bureaucrats who put together something called The World Conference Against Racism?

The reason given for our position is that we don't like a couple of items on the agenda, not that the conference is silly and a waste of time. I just don't think it's very classy to throw a tantrum over the agenda. I think that we have to attend those things simply because it's expected. It's no different than attending the funeral of a neighbor whether or not one finds funerals therapeutic or whether or not one liked the neighbor. It's simply rude not to, if for no other reason than that the location of the conference is supposed to be a celebration of the defeat of apartheid in South Africa.

As I said earlier, I know very little about this issue. There's not much information out there. If the Administration has a reason for not attending that's more substantial, then they should say so.
