That is the nutshell. As it stands, those of West Indian descent do better than most African- Americans. This may reflect the self- selection of the immigrant, yearning for opportunity, and transmitting such ardor to the next generation, but it also belies the charge that racism is the main impediment to further progress. Even in middle class households, black students do markedly worse on the SATs, and have more need of remedial programs in college, than white students. More and more people are realizing that it is because of a poor appreciation of the importance of reading and study, sometimes going so far as to stigmatize a taste for such things as "acting white". Blacks account for an inordinate number of degrees in sociology, social work, and related fields, especially at the graduate level, and the black middle class is heavily dependent on government jobs. The scarcity of blacks with even minors in math and the hard sciences is causing a teacher crisis, as those with a background are lured off to fulfill corporate diversity goals as scientists, engineers, and technicians. The black community must prepare itself for competition, instead of trying to dilute competition in perpetuity in the name of affirmative action........

"The idea of the development revolution isn't just to survive as a people," he said.
"The aim is to thrive as a people.

Too bad he didn't identify the third revolution as stopping using the term "our people" and seeing blacks as a separate group with an agenda different from that of Americans in general, and moving to the point of their BEING no "black" agenda, just agendas of various groups the racial (and gender) composition of which is mixed and irrelevant to their agenda.

That, to me, should be the ultimate goal.

And now, work calls urgently.
