If I could carry new applications -beyond voice- over the now prevalent GSM network, just upgrading the software and making better use of the existing backhaul transmission, and if the users had only to replace their mobile terminals... That's exactly what happened with the PSTN carrying fax messages, the dial up Internet and mobile networks originated telephony over the same infrastructure. That allows ILECs to kill at will.
