AOL's MSIE is slower because it is an older version that MSFT negotiated into their package with AOL, and upgrading it was part of the "agreement" they were trying to wring out of AOL.
Of course, AOL doesn't need a browser anymore. So, that was a non-starter. 6.1 is about the best I've used in a long, long time. MSIE may be good for developers, but 6.1 loads every page faster than 4.78 or MSIE.

As for you leaving AOL....I'm surprised you'd stick it out if you don't use their stuff. It's cheaper to go it alone
