Intel's Barrett on Market Share, Recovery in PC Demand: Comment
2001-07-30 20:53 (New York)

Taipei, July 31, (Bloomberg) -- Craig Barrett, Intel Corp.'s
chief executive, comments on the largest chipmaker's market share,
recovery of the computer business and outlook for Taiwan's
computer industry. Barrett was speaking at a company event in
Taiwan.

On when the computer industry will recover:
``I'm looking for the computer industry to recover in another
three to six months. The computer area is likely to recover before
the communications area. The communications industry is going to
be sick another six to 12 months.
``After recovery, the computer networking business should
grow about 30 percent per year. The computer business won't grow
that fast.''

On Intel's market share in the processor business, which declined
in the first half. Barrett said Intel expects to regain lost
market share:
``If you lose market share in a slowdown, it will be
difficult to get it back during the recovery.''

On the difficulties Taiwan's computer industry faces because of
the government's restrictions on investing in China, the island's
political rival:
``Open communications between geographies is important. Open
trade between geographies is important. Free movement of
information and services is very important.''
