Those figures also suggest that the inspections are doing their job and removing unsafe vehicles from the road. I wonder how the actual accident rates compare.

I also found it interesting that the article referred to "the desire of American truckers to prevent low-paid, non-unionized Mexican drivers from taking their jobs" without mentioning the fact that Mexico has already opened up to American truck traffic, thus presumably providing more Teamster jobs. It would be interesting to see what percentage of the Teamsters actually haul Mexican goods.

Ultimately, of course, allowing jobs to migrate south will boost Mexican purchases of American goods. Helping the Mexican economy to grow will create far more opportunity for American labor than protectionism ever will.

But that would require thinking beyond tomorrow, for which labor is not famous.
