JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has dismissed a declaration by Durban Roodepoort Deep [JSE:DUR; NASDAQ:DROOY] ] that it would be forced to put itself into the hands of liquidators two days after strike action.
" But there will be losers all round if the work stoppage goes ahead and DRD is forced to fold. NUM will lose 20,000 paying members, South Africa will lose one of its oldest mining houses, and the company's predominantly US retail shareholder base will take a pounding."

" The market is taking heed of the warning signs. DRD shed 10 cents today on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange to close on R7.40 a share, well off its high of R10.70 on 25 May. Johannesburg analysts are holding their breath for DRD's next move but for now it looks like the company and its workforce are set on a collision course with potentially catastrophic repercussions. "
