I didn't technically go short which is impossible in a retirement account -- I bought Profunds ultrashort OTC fund. It shorts the NDX but also has a kicker: its leveraged 2 to 1. In other words if NDX goes down 2% then it goes up 4%. If you're wrong then you get penalized double. Rydex funds can also be used but I don't think they are leveraged.

John. Fidelity allows buying of puts and calls in an IRA.
I do it all the time.

You can not short them for obvious reasons.
Perhaps a short PUT if covered 100% in cash but I do not know.
