Here's another option -- go through Clifton Fadiman's Lifetime Reading Plan book by book. Or pick an era -- he goes chronologically, pretty much. Starts with the Epic of Gilgamesh, which I've never read, then on to the Iliad and Odyssey, which I have but woudn't mind re-reading.

Browsing him, I thought it might be fun, since I think all of us are interested in societial/political issues, to read Tocqueville and see how much we think has changed and, maybe more interesting, hasn't changed since he wrote.
But people have to be interested if we're to get a good discussion going, Madam Director!
