Ted Re..A blended down socialism isn't socialism anymore.
Marx considered socialism as the stage between capitalism and communism. <<<<<<<

First of all, I apologize in that I mispoke when I said blended down socialism isn't socialism anymore. I meant to say it isn't pure socialism, and as such should actually be named something else. I do realize their are variants. Second, I haven't read much about Marx, but I assumed communism was the mechanism to bring about socialism.

Communism under the Russian dictators has been a sham...<<<<

Communism has been a sham under all types of rulers. I would consider Castro a benevelant ruler, whose people seem to like him. But communism has failed there also. There have been all types of gov. who have tried communism, and all have failed. Iran, while not communist, has taken land from the owners, and met with the same fate. The rich are rich for a reason, they know how to make profits, the common laborers don't. Many people think they can run a business, but actually only a few really know how.

The problem once again...how do you stay competitive in a world...an American world....that does not feel its citizens deserve such benefits.<<<<<<<<

Many people can take as much time off as they wish. They just have to pay for it themselves. In addition, most companies give their employees, 2-4 wks of vacation, plus 2 wks sick pay. How much time off does a person really need? In addition 40% of workers on vacation, check in with their office, so even the workers don't necessarily want to be on vacation.

" the gov't will pay you to stay in school..although higher education in Germany is more rigorous than it is here so I am not sure its such a great deal, "

Yah know, Germans like to believe this, but it isn't really true. Sure, if you want to compare a typical German university to most of our schools with open enrollment, then you have a point. But Germany doesn't have anything that can hold a candle to our top schools. Germany has the advantage that the only way you can get into the universities is by going to Gymnasium which paves the way. This means that their Universities don't get stuck teaching remedial classes and offering finger painting and basket weaving as degree fields. The downside, from the American point of view, is that it requires the passing of tests and a selection process in our equivalent of Jr. High, and that smacks of elitism. Apparently that is becoming true in Germany also, used to be about 1/3 of the highschoolers went to Gymnasium, now that number is approaching 60%. So they are getting the same pressures to "dumb down" their classes like we get. At least this is what my wife tells me, and she was trained to teach in a Gymnasium.

Apparently the German government has been trying to address the higher education problem for a number of years. I recently saw an article in the paper where Rice University is working with some Universities in Germany to upgrade their programs.
