An analog picture on HDTV has better clarity, but my eye did not find it that much better. HDTV uses a digital processor to apply corrections and has a higher definition screen.

HDTV really shines when you use the satellite or DVD material available. Over the air broadcasts and cable are yet to come.

My understanding is that the standard has been resolved.
