Our discussion dealt less with the reasons for opposition than the reasons for the unnecessarily dismissive manner in which that opposition has been expressed. One of the few things I (and a lot of others around the world) appreciated about Clinton was the effort he put into putting on at least a decent show of multilateralism and concern for the positions taken by other countries. I understand the emotional satisfaction that many people get from telling the rest of the world to fuck off, but I am not convinced that it is a smart policy in the long run.

I'd be the last to say we should submit to the will of other nations, but there are many alternatives between submission and dismissal.
