Why should the way the US goes be determined by other countries? If we have a treaty obligation then at one point the US agreed to it and then the US senate ratified that treaty. Absent such an agreement why should we not look at issues of cooperation or agreement with other countries on an issue by issue basis. If we have the same goals and the same opinion on how to reach those goals then by all means we should work together. If we have the same goals but different opinions on how to reach them then we can look for common ground and go our own way where we disagree. If we have different goals on a particular issue then perhaps we should be diplomatic and polite in expressing it but we should also make our opinion clear and not feel we have to follow ideas that we disagree with.
