Well, my list of differences has few bullets, starting on something like:

o check the population stats and the differences thereof
o check out differences in budgets (governmental spending habits, military expenditures)
o look into the industry/employment mix now and then

...

Re Germany and the unemployment: the 8 percent is sort of correct, factor in the high unemployment in former DDR (peak was I think app 15%) To be able to handle that burden it takes a) some sort of social contract (so called social state, villified many times in places near us) and b) pretty strict budgetary policy to get Germany over the debt hill - currently I think at about 67% of GDP)
