The governors from the central and mountain states are all over this as a safety concern.

It provides a good political argument but I don't see it as being a very logical one. If the trucks and drivers are required to meet US standards I can't see how they would cause some large increase in accidents. If the governors of these states are so concerned about safety then IMO they should put more effort into enforcing the current safety standards and look into ways that it might make sense to modify the standards rather then excluding drivers who do meet the standards in violation of our treaty obligations.
