Pete, I'm not the one with a duplicitous argument. You are. My view is that CPUs make up a good percentage of the server market, but not enough to be too expensive. My WAG is between 10% and 25%. At those figures, leaving some CPU slots open will save some significant money, but populating them isn't going to be overly expensive, either. Let's assume for the moment that your view is true, that CPUs only make up 2% of total server sales. Let's also assume that this percentage is based on your other assumption that only half the CPU slots are filled. It's easy to see that populating the rest of the CPU slots only costs 2% more. That means there aren't any significant cost savings when you leave half the slots open. Yet you argue otherwise. That's where your argument falls apart. <So you think a savvy customer would add $9000 to a system of any cost to go from 0.099 second response time over 0.100 seconds> Now you're resorting to strawmen. If adding two more CPUs increases the performance of the system by 50%, but only costs 10% to 25% more, wouldn't you say that's a good deal? <There are even cases where adding a CPU actually slows a system down.> I'm sure you will be more than happy to come up with some examples of this that have absolutely no relevance to the viability of Intel's 4-way and 8-way server products.
