Dear Tench:

But other RISCs were 8 way and other OEMs had 8 ways while Intel didn't. Yet, you also claimed that AMD purchased a cheap chipset from Compaq (DEC), when they did not have a cheap SHV one. You can not have it both ways. All AMD got was a FSB, and Intel purchased a chip set already in development along with other things. It still took additional years to put the chipset into production. AMD had to build a brand new chipset from scratch. Going from 8 way to 16 way SHV for Intel may not be easy, but you have additional problems because you are connecting busses and not single P2P links. Besides the busses were not designed for anything more than 4 way to start with. At least EV6 was designed for up to 14 way P2P. Do not think that AMD will have all the problems you encounter going from 2 way to 4 way links. They will have fewer because of less legacy to deal with.
