I'm a lover, not a hater.

Excuse me. The title of the book derives from a quote from Swift: "When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him".

Ignatius is not one of the confederacy, he is, in his view at least, the true genius.

He also used the word "decency" rather frequently, and that is whence the comparison sprang.

I see that you haven't read the book either. Perhaps you should. You could use a good giggle.

Brees, you've taken some hits lately--I noticed that the tone of your posts seemed to change when you started talking about being ignored on RWET--so I can see why you might perceive those hits as part of a pattern but you're reading way too much into my role in it.

I rarely say anything directly to posters about their deportment although I try very hard to do what I can to keep this place safe for civil and thoughtful discussion. When things get too nasty, I usually just go away for a while. I was gone for three days a week ago after YYB showed up and stirred the pot to a boil. I was disappointed today when BiA interrupted what I thought was a good conversation. But I rarely call people on their comments because I don't want to be too much of a boring old thread nanny.

My reaction to your calling me a leftie last week was set up my my banning from RWET. You were just in the wrong place at the wrong time when I was in no mood to put up with the leftie comment.

I called you on your comment about Steven and his kids because your charge, in a post addressed to me, sounded like child abuse, which is criminal, as opposed to his comparing you, perhaps unfavorably, with a book character. I don't believe for a minute that Steven would set his kids up with sex. Maybe when they're of age he would, but certainly not before. I didn't think I could let the charge stand after you repeated it.

When BiA first posted today after a long time, I gave her what I thought was a friendly welcome. It's my custom to greet people. When she subsequently used material that I had posted to her in a way that I thought inappropriate and disruptive to our continued discussion, I spoke up.

I don't much care about posters' political persuasions. I judge posters by two things, if they make substantive comments and if they're civil. I don't join or "set up" any gang activity, at least not on purpose.

If you want see bad faith in my actions, there's nothing I can do about it. I'm not thin skinned, so there's no need for you to stop calling me names or for anyone to defend me.

Karen
