Rich, typically, the last hour trading direction "dictates" (statistically speaking) the beginning of the next day, so one trader taught me once upon a time.

IMHO, short-term exponential MA and Bollinger bands extending from the previous day seem to hold enormous significance early in the new day. When there is an established down trend from the previous day, the first rally to test the 3-min, 24-period eMA in the early morning going almost always fail.
