JRH, it's probably true that we're seeing more enthusiastic support for Kyoto because many proponents know it won't go into effect, and they'll be off the hook. It's also true, however, that recent scientific studies show that global warming is more than just "noise," as you suggest. In fact, the dilemma Bush faced was that he couldn't find any well regarded spokespersons from the scientific community who were willing to argue that global warming was merely "noise" or that greenhouse gases from burning of hydrocarbons had little or no effect on global warming.

That's what caused the recent controversy. Bush hoped someone could argue strongly that it was all a bunch of baloney. Instead, not finding scientific validation for doing nothing or for scrapping the whole effort, he still essentially said he would do nothing. This is not constructive, nor does it instill confidence among other leaders that Bush knows what he's doing.

Very good points Frank and John.

The "majority of one" thesis and the continuing efforts of liberals to isolate the Bush Admin politically and ideologically from the mainstream isn't persuasive. Claiming he's "stupid" is itself absurd and provocative IMO.

They tried some of the same tactics with Reagan (trying to show him out of the loop, "not engaged" etc) and it didn't work then, either.

If Bush senior hadn't caved on his "no new taxes" pledge Clinton would never have been president and we'd probably have built a more stable prosperity vs the house of cards that began collapsing last year.

To the thread:

Sometimes, biting my tongue<g> I've done me best to refrain from name calling aimed at the Clintons in recent months. Hope other posters here will show our president the same courtesy.
