An interesting and enlightening post. I have read snippets that indicated that fairly universal marriage was relatively recent- -that in the medieval period, for example, it was largely an upper class custom meant mainly to legalize inherited titles for the offspring.

And another good point you bring up is that, because of the increasing need for increasingly great amounts of education, marriage is now delayed well past what was common in our grandparents and great-grandparents time.

So in the good old days it was easier to be good. :-)
