"Now would they ever think of using their many extra billions to invest in clean energy development? Probably not."

I didn't say they were saints, I said the high prices in California and the high energy prices have nothing to do with the Bush presidency or some conspiracy of such. Whether they choose to invest their profits in cleaner fuel or aleternative fuel is their decision, unless the government forces them to change as it has and rightly so. I readily concede that govt mandates have resulted in cleaner air and more environmentally friendly fuels. By mandating these the government forced the development of these products (the government did not invent them, but they encouraged their development by requiring them). This is the proper role of govt. and it is one of the reasons I am a dem and not rep. But I am self educated in economics and while I have no credentials I understand how it works well enough to have made money with that understanding. There will be shortages and high prices again and there will be gluts and low prices again. For the most part these are the result of natural economics (or Opec Cartel power- although they understand that permantly high and economic unrealistic pricing will kill the goose that layed the golden egg and thus are constrained by economic principles). This is not to say that politics will never play a part as indeed poor legislation and bad government polciy is largely what caused the problem in CA.
