"It's the principles, not the paper, that count." On this we can absolutely agree. However, it does not follow for me that the paper does not count. The principles underly what the paper represents. As our flag represents a nation of liberty and a constitutional rule of law. The flag itself is just cloth; but your drapes which are also cloth would not be an equivalent substitute. Show me an equivalent substitute for the Marriage Declaration and I will probably call it a marriage. It is not the paper but what it represents in principle.
