Weak automobile sales from General Motors took its stock down 1.2% in about twenty minutes time, contributing to losses in the equity market and helping to lift the bond market from its lows. Total automobile sales appear to be running below estimates by several hundred thousand vehicles at an annual rate. Despite the pullback in July sales, sales may yet return to strong levels, judging by recent data from the Conference Board. In their latest consumer confidence survey, they saw a big jump in the percentage of people who plan to buy a new automobile.
